Scabies

Scabies is caused by an infestation of the mite, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. It is often transmitted by direct person-to-person contact and occasionally by fomites. It is extremely contagious. The reaction usually occurs 2-6 weeks after initial infestation for those acquiring scabies for the first time. Pruritus may start within 24-72 hours in patients with a history of infestation. The skin lesions are variable and include pink-red papules, nodules, and burrows on the genitalia, interdigital spaces, wrists, areolae, armpits, and intergluteal spaces. Papules may appear darker, violaceous or gray on individuals with darker skin tones.
