Histoplasmosis

Histoplasmosis, also known as Darling's disease, is due to the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum. It is endemic to southeastern and central United States as well as other countries. Erythematous papules, umbilicated papules, nodules, molluscum contagiosum-like lesions, and ulcers are seen in the acute disseminated histoplasmosis form. Plaques, nodules, and ulcers of the tongue, buccal mucosa, larynx, or lips are seen in the chronic disseminated histoplasmosis form. Primary cutaneous histoplasmosis is rare and can present as an umbilicated papule, nodule, or indurated ulcer with associated lymphadenopathy. It is often seen after trauma.
