Folliculitis

Folliculitis is a disorder that can be divided into superficial and deep folliculitides. Superficial folliculitis is characterized by follicular papules and pustules, often on an erythematous base with crust formation occurring later. Superficial folliculitis can be due to infectious agents (bacterial, fungal, viral, and other such as Demodex) and non-infectious agents including normal flora, irritants, drug-induced, and eosinophilic. Deep folliculitis is characterized by firm, tender erythematous papules or nodules. Deep folliculitis can be classified as furuncles, sycosis, pseudofolliculitis barbae, acne keloidalis, and hidradenitis suppurativa.
